Locations

Birmingham's plumbing changes a lot from one side of the metro to the other. The prewar houses near downtown have galvanized supply pipe and clay sewer laterals; the subdivisions along I-65 in Shelby County were mostly built in the 1990s and 2000s and are wearing out water heaters and early plastic fittings instead. Each town page below covers what tends to fail there and what a good plumber will look at.

Jefferson County towns

Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Homewood and Mountain Brook sit over the mountain from the city, where steep lots and long downhill sewer runs meet big old oaks. Bessemer, to the southwest, has a deep stock of older homes with original pipe. Gardendale to the north and Trussville to the northeast mix older streets with newer neighborhoods, and Leeds sits out east along I-20 near where the county meets St. Clair and Shelby.

Shelby County towns

Pelham, Alabaster, Helena and Chelsea make up the fastest-growing part of the area. Many of the houses there are now old enough that the original tank water heater, supply lines and shutoff valves are reaching the end of their life at about the same time, so a single failure is often a good moment to have a plumber check the rest.

City neighborhoods

Inside Birmingham itself, the home page covers the city neighborhoods directly, including Southside, Highland Park, Forest Park and Avondale. Those streets are full of 1920s to 1950s houses, and the galvanized steel lines and cast iron or clay laterals in them corrode, crack and pull in roots. Low water pressure at every faucet and repeat clogs in the main line are the two complaints that come up most from these blocks.
