Drain Cleaning and Sewer Line Repair
A single slow drain is a nuisance. Three slow drains at once, or a toilet that gurgles when the washing machine empties, is the house telling you the main line is in trouble. Drains of every size clog across the Birmingham area, but the costly problems usually sit in the sewer lateral, the pipe that carries everything from your house to the city or county main.
One drain or the main line?
The pattern tells you a lot. If only the kitchen sink is slow, the clog is almost always in that sink branch: grease, food and soap building up over years. If the lowest drain in the house backs up when you flush an upstairs toilet, if water rises in the tub when the washer drains, or if more than one fixture gurgles, the blockage is downstream of where those branches meet. That means the main.
Another sign is a wet or unusually green strip in the yard along the line, or a sewer smell outside near the cleanout. A broken lateral leaks into the soil long before it backs up into the house. If sewage is already coming up through a floor drain, shut the water off first and stop running fixtures until the line is open.
Camera first, then the fix
On a main line problem, a good plumber runs a camera before recommending anything beyond clearing the immediate blockage. The camera goes in through the cleanout and shows what the pipe is made of, where the problem is and how far down the line it sits. Ask to see the same picture they do. A root mass at a clay joint twenty feet out, a belly where the pipe has sagged and holds water, a crushed section, or a line coated in years of kitchen grease each call for a different repair.
Without that picture a drain company can only guess, and the usual guess is to snake it and leave. Sometimes that is the right answer. Often it only buys a few months.
Snaking or hydro jetting
A cable machine, the snake, cuts a path through a clog and is the right tool for a single blockage or a soft clog in a branch line. It is quick and it gets water moving. It does not clean the pipe walls, and roots that it cuts grow back, often thicker than before.
Hydro jetting sends water at very high pressure through a nozzle that scours the inside of the pipe, flushing out grease, scale and root fibers along the full length. It is the better choice for grease-heavy kitchen lines, for roots that keep coming back and for cast iron that has built up scale. It is not right for every pipe: a clay line with broken sections or cast iron rusted thin can be damaged by jetting, which is one more reason the camera should go in first.
Roots, clay and cast iron on hillside lots
Over the mountain, the problem is often the lot itself. In Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills and Homewood many houses sit high on steep lots, and the sewer lateral runs a long way downhill to the main, frequently under mature oaks. Those roots find the joints in old clay pipe, grow in for the moisture and slowly fill the line. Root-filled laterals are a regular complaint from homeowners up in Mountain Brook and along the older streets around Edgewood in Homewood for exactly this reason.
The red clay soil adds its own trouble. It shrinks when the late-summer dry spells come and swells in wet winters, and over decades that movement pulls clay joints apart and cracks cast iron. A line can go from working to broken in a single season after a very dry year.
Repairing or replacing a sewer line
Once the camera shows what is wrong, the options are usually clear. A single broken section or a bad joint can often be dug up and replaced on its own. A line with roots at every joint, a long belly or cast iron rotted along its bottom is usually a replacement, either by excavation or, where the ground and the pipe allow, by trenchless methods that pull or line a new pipe through the old path with far less digging. Trenchless is not possible on every lateral, especially one with sharp bends or a collapsed stretch, and a straight answer about whether yours qualifies is a good sign in a plumber.
Line replacement is the biggest job on this page, so the price matters most here. Ask for the price in writing, based on the actual repair from a single fixture to a full line replacement, before any work starts. A sewer replacement also needs a permit and an inspection, so ask whether the quote includes both.
Sump pumps for spring storms
Birmingham gets roughly 53 inches of rain a year, and the heaviest of it tends to arrive in hard thunderstorms from March through May. That is when basements and crawlspaces flood, when yard drains overflow and when a sump pump that sat idle all winter turns out not to start. A sump pump job can mean a new pump, a replacement for a failed one, a check valve, a battery backup, or a discharge line rerouted so it sends water away from the foundation instead of back toward it.
If your pump is more than about ten years old or you have never tested it, pour a bucket of water into the pit before storm season. If the pump does not kick on and empty it, it is time to have a plumber look.
Why leaks cost more in Jefferson County
Jefferson County runs the regional sewer system, and its rates are among the highest in the country after the county sewer debt crisis. Sewer charges follow your metered water use, so a running fixture or a leaking line inside the house is billed twice. A cracked lateral also lets groundwater and stormwater into the system, and with the Cahaba River watershed downstream of much of the metro, overflows get real attention from the county. Fixing a broken lateral is good for your bill and for the river.
